Hechenbichler presents research on manure additives at ManuREsource Conference 2026
At the ManuREsource International Conference in Wageningen, Netherlands, Lukas Markl, MSc and Dr. Silvia Fluch from Hechenbichler GmbH present their research results on the topic “Manure additives and their effects on slurry storage and field application.”
Manure additives are liquid or solid compounds that can be organic, inorganic, or based on living microorganisms. They have been used in agriculture for many years. However, the mechanisms behind their effects are still the subject of ongoing research.
The current study investigated how manure additives can influence key aspects of slurry management. The research focused on potential effects on crust formation during storage, greenhouse gas emissions, odour reduction, microbial activity as well as nutrient dynamics and fertilisation efficiency.
The results show that the investigated manure additives can improve manure properties. Their effectiveness however depends on the specific conditions in which they are applied. Future large-scale studies under practical farm conditions will therefore be necessary to better understand their full potential.
ManuREsource is an international platform where researchers, policymakers and industry experts exchange knowledge on solutions for manure surpluses, manure management and treatment technologies, as well as innovative approaches to valorising manure, including nutrient recovery and energy production.
