EU project: BUGALPS

This project is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Alpine Space program.

BUGALPS Website
Building Circular Insect Value Chains for Animal Feed in Alpine Space
  • Supported EU project

Project duration from 2021 – 2027 with a budget of over 2.6 million euros

  • Sustainable Project Objective

To promote circular value chains and reduce dependence on imported soy-based animal feed

  • Dedicated Project Partners

Building a transnational alliance for sustainable agricultural innovation across six Alpine countries

BUGALPS aims to establish sustainable insect-based value chains for animal feed production in the Alpine region.

By transforming suitable agricultural and food production by-products into valuable insect protein, BUGALPS seeks to reduce dependence on imported soy-based feed. The project aims to improve resource efficiency, strengthen regional food security and promote circular agricultural production.

BUGALPS will focus on three key areas:

  • Cooperation

Establishing transnational cooperation to develop and test sustainable insect-based value chains for poultry and fish feed production.

  • Platform

Developing practical tools and business models that support regional insect farming, resource efficiency and the adoption of circular solutions in agriculture.

  • Training

Creating training materials to help farmers and businesses understand insect-based feed systems and their environmental and economic benefits.

Interreg Projekt BUGALPS

Interreg Project BUGALPS:
Building Circular Insect Value Chains for Animal Feed in Alpine Space

BUGALPS aims to develop sustainable and circular value chains for animal feed production in the Alpine region. By using insects to convert suitable organic by-products into high-quality protein, the project seeks to reduce dependence on imported soy and improve regional resource efficiency. The project focuses on three key areas:

  • Establishing transnational cooperation to develop and test insect-based feed value chains for poultry and aquaculture.

  • Developing practical tools and business models to support circular agricultural production and regional resource use.

  • Creating training programmes that help farmers and businesses understand and implement sustainable insect-based feed solutions.

Partners from six Alpine countries will collaborate to test insect production, feed applications and the use of resulting by-products. With a total budget of approximately EUR 2.69 million, BUGALPS is supported by the European Union through the Interreg Alpine Space Programme, with approximately EUR 1.85 million in ERDF funding.
